Windy weekend
Loch Duart Games
With winds forcast at 70 mph gusts over the weekend, and strong enough to scorch my lettuce plants, things didn't look too promising for the stall. I lost the tops of my parsnips in the garden, although the croft faired a bit better.
The stall survived the worst of the weather, and we managed to sell most of the produce. We sold out of Cabbage, Broccoli, all of the tomatoes (Ailsa Craig, Gardeners Pearl, and Gardeners Delight), Eggs, Lettuce, Carrots, Parsnips, Peas, and Cauliflower. Had a few Turnips, Potatoes, Beetroot, Onions and Courgettes left over, but cakes and jams also sold well, as did Cocoa Mountain chocolates (especially the drops for the children).
It is noticable that we are now building up a regular clientelle, who appreciate the quality and freshness of our produce, and look forward to the stall in the village.
Mackay Country Bough tent, Ceilidh and Workshops
It still has to be agreed, but we are hoping to hold another sale at the Mackay Country Bough tent next saturday on the campsite.
On friday 27th Aug, there will be a ceilidh in the Anchorage, Scourie, with esteemed storyteller Essie Stewart, and celebrated singer Ishbel Macaskill.
On saturday 28th Aug, there will be a Gaelic song workshop at 11:00 am, basic Bough Tent Gaelic at 2:30 pm, Ossian tales at 3:00 pm, Srupag, chat and tea at 4:00 pm, and at 9:00 pm, archive films - Summer in the straths (outdoors if fine - bring your own chairs and blanket, or indoors if wet).
In partnership with Am Parbh, and kindly hosted by the Mackenzie Family.

North West Sutherland Foodlink
Welcome to the new blog for NWS Foodlink.
Our web-page at http://www.nwsfoodlink.co.uk/ will continue to operate, but this blog will now serve as the main news provider for our activities.
What are we trying to acheive?
NWS Foodlink was set up in 2006 to give to local community a chance to purchase fresh, locally grown, seasonal vegetables. To encourage people to grow their own fruit and vegetables, and provide an outlet for surplus produce. From grants and other sources, a refrigerated van was purchased, and a weekly run was made around the coast from Bettyhill to Lochinver. After a few seasons, we realised that travelling these distances was not economical, and we opted to set up small local sales. So far the only success has been the stall in Scourie, where a few local growers have managed to keep the stall running on a fortnightly basis.

We maintain a presence at most of the major events in the area, from the Assynt, and Durness games, and a recycling event in Lochinver. We also arrange our normal events, Seedy and Seedling sundays, and the ever popular Tattie festival.

NWSFL also arranges courses for people to learn how to grow crops, as well as having links to courses run by the Scottish Crofters Federation.
What can we do for you?
Besides supplying you with delicious fresh locally grown vegetables, if you are a grower, we can sell your surpluses for you, benefiting you and the local community. We are always looking for new growers. If you want to get involved, please contact me below.
Pete.
